This morning, I had the pleasure of talking with Heather Meyers at San Diego 6 in the Morning, about healthier options for “fast” food on the go.
- Parents, on the go, kids complaining of being hungry, so when we think of “fast” food, we end up at a drive through
- First, “fast” food does not mean you are stuck going through a drive through – there are plenty of other quick options
- People make a lot of assumptions – for example, many people assume that when they eat a fast food hamburger, they are getting real hamburger meat
- Recent study of 8 fast food chains – 2-14% actual meat
- Many people talk about “healthy” and they are still referring to fat content, calories, and sodium….but in my practice, I care about far more than just that
- We need to become more aware of far more than that, if we want long term health for our families
I look for several other factors when selecting foods to eat when I’m out and about
- How processed is the food?
- How is it prepared? (is it microwaved or prepared fresh?)
- Artificial colors
- Preservatives
- Artificial sweeteners
- Fillers – fast food meats
- GMOs
So what are some strategies?
- Look for something with “whole” food components ie. a salad with whole veggies, a sandwich with meat and fixings – not looks like it was formed in a mold in a factory
- If you are going to eat meat for protein, opt for fresh caught fish or tuna salad
- Avoid corn products (tortillas, tortilla chips, popcorn) and soy bc of GMOs – close to 90% of all corn grown in us is GMO and about 95% of soy
- Look on the ingredient label – should be short
- Go gluten free if you can – wheat of today is NOT the wheat from a generation ago
- Avoid luncheon meats (unless organic) because of nitrite content (can affect behavior and has neurological implications)
Where to go:
- Great new fast food places that are coming up that have grass fed, organic beef (Pure Burger)
- Dominos, and other pizza places, are offering gluten free crusts – it’s a good thin crust
- Grocery stores – Jimbos, whole foods, etc all have “fast” food options, already prepared, with lots to choose from, Trader Joes has prepared sandwiches
- Starbucks has a protein box which is a fabulous option

While in Phoenix recently, I needed a to-to option for dinner at a local Safeway (Vons in California). The chain appears to want my business because it put the already been cooked (ABC) food at the front of the store, and they had a lunchable-type protein pack filled with fruits and vegetables. It was their Open Nature brand which my family buys a lot, and enjoys.
I felt better about picking up something on the go from Safeway because Open Nature is all-natural with no preservatives. Here is a list of what they do use in their products: http://www.safeway.com/ShopStores/Open-Nature-Glossary-AG
