In honor of my daughter’s birthday, I wanted to bring something to the class for all the children to share. Dreaded the idea of bringing cupcakes, or cookies – less because of the fact they aren’t the healthiest thing, but more because these children celebrate birthday parties every week and collectively, are probably eating…oh…..I’d say an extra 10 pounds of sugar and gallons of food coloring annually due to this practice.
I hear it all the time from parents, “But the kids won’t like it if I bring something healthy….”
Yea, yea….countless times I’ve heard this.
In addition to not even knowing how often my child is eating junk at her school birthday parties, I wanted to make sure to not leave any of the children out of the celebration. So this was gluten, dairy, nut free. All children could partake.
I can’t take credit for the creativity – just the execution. Saw a picture on social media about a month ago and knew I would do this myself when the time came.
Made it the day before, as a fun project to do with my daughter. She was oh so proud to bring it to her class.
The oohs and aahs that came when the “cakes” were unveiled were immediately followed by “Did you MAKE those?”
She was beaming from ear to ear, proud to display her handiwork.
I was expecting some boos….or disappointed children, for not having the standard fare.
What I didn’t expect:
- Rushing the table to pick their piece
- Fighting over the mangos
- Asking for more and my realizing I didn’t have more to give these hungry rascals
So parents, if you think kids won’t like healthier party food, think again.
