Last week, I had the honor being invited to participate in a discussion following an episode of The Ricki Lake Show where the topic was how to raise great men. It was an important discussion for parents of boys, and how understanding how boys are different than girls can help parents adjust their style to help meet the needs of their sons.
During this conversation, we had the opportunity to hear from psychologist Dr. David Swanson, as well as the producers of the episode. There were some surprisingly touching moments as well, from both Brad the production assistant who was raised by a single mother, to a discussion between Jessica and her father Gene. For an incredibly touching moment between a father and his daughter, check out the sweet moment at about 57 minutes into the video. Yes, we were all in tears at this great man sharing his heart. I adore you Gene! 🙂
We discussed topics such as the balance between women wanting men to be strong, and sensitive, yet resenting when the man is actually sensitive. We also talked about single parenting, and the best ways to nurture who your child really is, and not who we want them to be.
These conversations (which happen every weekday at 5:30pm PST), are a wonderful way to engage in conversation with the community about the topic which aired that day on The Ricki Lake Show. It was so fun to be able to interact with people who were watching live, and involve them, and their questions, into the discussion.
